Just in time for Christmas and New Year preparations and celebrations São Mamede Art Gallery is exhibiting an artist at the same level of these festivities, Guilherme Parente, the undeniable amazing Portuguese artist, has his work in a exhibition and a book called “Conversa, vida e obra” that you cannot miss!

Guilherme Parente

Born in 1940 in Lisbon, Parente started drawing and painting early and always knew that wanted to pursue this passion and live just from his paintings. Unfortunately that decision was made only in 1970, when the artist returns from London, where he was studying at the Slade School through a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation scholarship. Before London, Parente had already study art and create a lot of work in Lisbon at Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes and Gravura – Sociedade Cooperativa de Gravadores Portugueses, since 1970, places that he usally went after working all day on a job he didn’t like, but only after London, started to grew and became more well known, winning awards such as Malhoa award in 1975 and Painting Award of the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes in 1989.

His work is truly characteristic and unmistakable, a continuous sequence of adventures, fantastic stories, a dream full of color on each canvas. Really connected to the journeys of the Portuguese Discoveries, the idea of the boat and all its travel insinuations. Guilherme Parente has the purpose and goal through his work of making the public feel good, joyful and serene. Mixes light and bright colors with black and other strong colors, but always with the purpose of the magic, and the unknown, never in a dramatic way. Creates a world that goes beyond our imagination.

An essential exhibition to contemplate and an essential book to have.
