Manuel Cargaleiro has become a bit of a portuguese icon. Just like in our last post – about Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso – Paris has had a great influence in his life, being his home. But contrary to the aforementioned artist he has yet to have such a big exhibition.
However we felt he too deserves to be talked about and so we went to find his files, here at the gallery.
Cargaleiro has exhibited many times here at São Mamede, and is still a very requested artist. It is no surprise to have not one, but two folders just for him.
With so many newspapers and magazines to go through we chose one about a group exhibition – mainly because of the company he was showing with. It was because of these world class exhibition that São Mamede became a world class gallery after-all. Almada Negreiros and Jorge Barradas are both some of the most important artists of their time – and Cargaleiro was still highly praised by many important critics.
The treasure of these files is priceless – and it always so interesting to find all kinds of information about our artists.
Let’s give Cargaleiro the fame he deserves. One day he will too be showing at the Grand Palais in Paris.
